Guy Gagnon Announced as YCCC Golf Coach
Some May Say It's a HOLE IN ONE!
Wells, ME (07/13/2021) — As York County Community College prepares for their athletic seasons set to begin in Fall 2021, finding the right coaches to implement these programs was crucial. One of the first official coaches in place is Guy Gagnon. Coach Gagnon was named the head coach for York County's inaugural, co-ed golf team. Some might even say it was a hole-in-one decision.
Gagnon is from Biddeford, Maine, where his journey as a golf player and eventually coach began. Since the age of 13, he has competed in numerous local, state, and regional events. From being a junior member at Dutch Elm Golf Course in Arundel, ME, to being a member of Biddeford Saco Country Club, Coach Gagnon has always had a passion for golf. He attended Wentworth Institute of Technology where he received his Associate's degree in Architectural Engineering, and then went on to get his Bachelor's degree in Business from University of Maine. He was also on the University of Maine Black Bears golf team and participated in competitive amateur golf in Maine and throughout New England. Gagnon has also won four club championships- talk about an ace!
Prior to his role in the YCCC athletic department, Gagnon had previous experience coaching golf at high school level for nine years. Throughout the years, he also gained coaching experience in numerous seasons of youth sports such as softball and soccer. When asked about the most important characteristics of being a coach, Gagnon emphasized three key points,
"Consistency of rules and instruction, being able to put yourself in the shoes of the student-athlete in order to understand how best to interact with them, and a sense of humor."
With competition and events set to begin in the fall, Gagnon is eager to start the tee. Specifically, he mentioned the excitement of starting a new program from scratch and hoping for a good response by current and future student-athletes. YCCC's new golf team allows their current and prospective students a chance to compete for conference and National championships, while also granting the development of many life-long skills as a student-athlete.
