CASEY CYR - Alumni Spotlight: From Criminal Justice Major to Dedicated Police Officer
Current Position: Patrol Officer, Eliot Maine Police Department
Wells, ME (07/25/2024) — Casey Cyr graduated from York County Community College (YCCC) with an Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice. Casey excelled in her program coursework with a particular affinity for courses around community relations, social problems, and victimology.
Casey started at YCCC in the Veterinary Technology program but because those program courses were limited due to Covid, Casey started Criminal Justice classes and enjoyed her coursework so much remained in the program. After her first year of college, she worked at the Wells Police Department for the summer and never looked back. In addition to her summer in Wells, Casey worked to enhance her chance of employment after graduation by actively engaging with students and local professionals to assisting with a criminal justice lab demonstration during a visit from Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona. After Casey graduated from YCCC, she attended the Maine Criminal Justice Academy where her skills in firearm proficiency, defensive tactics, and de-escalation techniques were perfected and started work at Eliot PD in December of 2023.
"My experience was great! All my professors, Tracey Cornell, Tim Burton, Chris Burbank, were encouraging and went out of their way to help me. When I felt like quitting, the staff and faculty at YCCC pushed me to keep going. I would not be where I am if I had chosen a different college."
Casey currently is employeed as patrol officer and desires to have a long and successful career in law enforcement. In the future, she hopes is to start a K-9 program, work with MDEA, and eventually become a detective. However, right now, she feels she is exactly where she wants to be; working in a department with amazing people where she can learn and grow. Casey feels that, Chief Moya is the best Chief in the state, and is happy to be a member of the Eliot Police Department.
Casey's path from a criminal justice major to a dedicated police officer shows the transformative power of education and passion for a career. Casey's path also shows that you never know what class may change your life! As Casey continues to make a positive impact at work, we hope that she finds some time to visit the college and serve as a role model for current students.
