YCCC Alumni Spotlight - Fred Kerrigan From Student to Advocate

Defending the Rights of Mainers

by YCCC

Wells, ME (08/01/2024) — Fred graduated with honors from York County Community College (YCCC) with an Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice. Throughout his academic journey, Fred exhibited a passion for the legal field, with a particular interest in representing and supporting marginalized individuals and communities.

During his time at YCCC, Fred also completed a short-term paralegal studies certificate offered by our Workforce Development division and inspired one of the first articulations between divisions. After graduation, Fred began working as a paralegal at Verill Dana in Portland while pursuing his Bachelor of Science Degree at Husson University. During this time, Fred gained invaluable experience and his work reinforced his passion for the law prompting him to pursue a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Maine School of Law. At Maine Law, Fred continued to champion individuals by working on indigent defense work. Fred graduated from the Maine Law and passed the Maine Bar in 2023.

Fred described his work in law school as "rewarding" and has transitioned the passion to help people to Pine Tree Legal Assistance where he works with Mainers facing illegal eviction. Fred's work assisting families maintain their home has been very fulfilling. Additionally, Fred educates and supports individuals and families navigating the eviction process in his work at Pine Tree Legal.

Fred always knew that he would attend law school but understood that college debt could be crippling. Fred chose York County Community College because of its affordability and the articulation agreements in place making the transition to Husson easy after graduation. Fred wants prospective students to know that education is worth the investment but to do it as smartly as possible, making YCCC an excellent choice as you start your college studies.

Fred's journey from a criminal justice student to practicing attorney shows the power an affordable education can have on a person and a community. We hope that Fred will return to YCCC as a teacher next year when we launch our Legal Studies degree program.
